The Malta Photographic Society has been the established organization for the development of photographers and photographic art for the last 50 years. It was established at a time when previous groupings of photographers had faded away. It currently provides a much needed  focal point for people who share a common interest in the art of photography either as hobby or as a profession. Like all forms of art, photography is either practiced for the participant’s own pleasure or taken further afield and developed into a profession, thereby earning the practitioner an income. Either way requires excellence in the work produced to elevate it to the realms of  the highest expression of  photographic art. Members of the Society have over the years been both amateurs, not earning an income, and professional who earn their living through photography; in both cases the highest standards of work is indiscernible.

Joseph Grixti  Alone But Full of Memories

With the development of the art form through the digital medium, photography has rapidly become part of our everyday life; the recording of spontaneous social statements and observations was not available in the past. The Society's aim is to encourage people to exercise a degree of judgment in the taking of their ‘snapshots’,  to capture something of the perceived image that will stand a test of time and taking the image into the level of being a ‘photograph’. Many of the photographs in this exhibition are from members who started their photographic interest with simple cameras. Digitization has also opened up vast possibilities in the expression of the artist’s work which is displayed  through digital creative images. Images that start in the normal photographic form are, with skill and artistic flair, manipulated into images  that have imagination, flair and beauty.

All forms of the photographic art will be found in this exhibition indicating that there exists a sound, mature and broad based community of photographers in the Maltese Islands.

Chris Azzopardi   Innocent Thoughts

The work displayed is but a small representation of what is produced by members of the Malta Photographic Society. Owing tothe fact that this is an exhibition of works which have been presented for the Open Annual Competition, there are  contributions from other photographers who are non members of the Society. The standard of photography in the Exhibition both from ‘Amateurs’ and ‘Professionals’ is a clear indication of the skills, craftsmanship and artistic vision required to produce a photograph which goes beyond being just a 'capture' of a moment in time. The Art of Photography is thriving well  in Malta.

It is our pleasure, to mount this Exhibition, for your pleasure. Enjoy!

George Swindells – Exhibition Chairman.
