Alan Montanaro was born in Malta where he graduated with honours from the Manoel Theatre Academy of Dramatic Arts (MTADA). He went on to become one of the country’s theatrical stalwarts with strong leanings towards mainstream classic comedy, pantomime and musical theatre.

Alan’s theatrical cocktail is as varied as it is colourful. His more memorable roles include Sir Algernon Moncrieff and Lord Goring in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest and An Ideal Husband respectively, Frank in Steven Berkhoff’s “Kvetch” and the part of “Man” in Christopher Durang’s Laughing Wild opposite Denise Mulholland. He recently starred as Herr Flick in the theatre production of ’Allo ‘Allo. His roles in musical theatre include Motel in Fiddler on the Roof, Sir Evelyn in Anything Goes and Larry in Sondheim’s Company. One of his most memorable roles, perhaps, was that of Albin in La Cage Aux Folles.

Alan’s name has become synonymous with the Maltese pantomime scene, earning him the nickname “Pantonaro”.  He has written a total of fourteen hugely successful pantos including Alison Wonderland, Hercules and Sinbad – the Tailor.

Alan co-presented Lanca Gejja, a 90-minute comedy show for PBS TV. He was also cast in the title role of The Wise Merchant for Bristol Television (UK).  Alan runs the Helen O’Grady Academy in Malta. The internationally acclaimed academy gives children the opportunity to follow a self-development programme designed to increase their confidence, self-esteem, communicative ability and creative talents.
